The Politics of Eating

Boy, I will be glad when this damn election is over.

Can I get an Amen?

My very dear friend and I had a great conversation today about how we got to be at the weight we're both at respectively. It's funny to think that I am the same person who hid her skinny body beneath baggy clothes in high school. I remember buying larger sized jeans because the length would always be right, and I found it comforting to be in clothes that didn't come close to fitting me.

I don't know where I got so off track in believing in myself. My parents were always very supportive and encouraging, and no emphasis was ever placed on appearances. I think it all started when I wanted to be a part of the "cool" crowd and I sought their approval for everything. We didn't have a lot of money so my clothes weren't good enough, and I thought if I were skinny enough and pretty enough they would want to keep me around.

After high school when I stopped playing sports year round and the activity ceased, the weight started coming on. The Freshman 15 was the Freshman 20 for me and I went from being able to eat anything I wanted, to eating crap and paying for it. College was very stressful and I dealt with it by eating crap constantly. My Sophomore year, I ran into a girl from high school who didn't recognize me cause I had "gained so much weight". I think I cried for 2 days.

After losing that weight while lifeguarding and being active, I found it crept back on (and then some) when I met my husband. Life got comfortable and I found myself 40 pounds heavier the year after we married.

I tried diet pills, crash diets, starvation -- everything you can think of -- to lose weight. I knew I was heavier but I didn't know how severe until I saw pictures from our family summer vacation. I couldn't believe that the person in those pictures was me. Right then and there I decided to join Weight Watchers and my life hasn't been the same since. It's helped me lose that weight, the weight I gained from my first pregnancy, and it's helping me lose the weight from my second pregnancy. I am a tried and true believer in this program and I will stick to it as long as I am alive.

Tonight, I was going to make Oreo Mousse for dessert, but The Husband neglected to tell me that he ate the last 4 Oreos I asked him to save for me. Oh well...I can share the recipe anyway.

Oreo Mousse

1 package Sugar Free Jello Pudding mix (chocolate or white chocolate)
1 container FF Cool Whip, thawed
4 Reduced Fat Oreo cookies, reserve some for top

Mix pudding mix with Cool Whip and Oreos. Sprinkle top with reserved Oreos. Freeze.

6 Servings

WW points = 3 per serving
